Summer Reading: Reading for pleasure is great for kids in many ways including keeping up their reading skills over the summer and helping them succeed in school. To this end, the Cameron Library was very proud to host two librarians from Fairfax County Public Library who visited us on Tuesday. They shared their summer reading program with us, and shared some fun book choices, too. To register for this FREE program, please stop by any branch of the public library beginning on the last day of school, or register online at: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/srp/
Summer Learning: Summertime is a time for fun and new research emphasizes the need for new learning during the summer. Here is a video that FCPS has shared with FCPS staff to highlight the need for summer learning in the home, so families can plan against “summer slide”.
New FCPS Bell Schedule: Beginning in September, new bell schedules will be implemented at all high schools, secondary schools, and middle schools. Some elementary schools will also start five or 10 minutes earlier or later next school year. The changes to the bell schedule will mean that every school will be in session for 6 hours and 45 minutes per day.
School Success: Parents raising readers and learners
Daily Learning Planner: Simple, daily tips on how parents of children from preschool through high school-age can support their child's learning at home.
Summer Reading!: Research shows that children who read for pleasure in the summer do better and forget less when they go back to school. And it's not just in reading. Kids who don't read over the summer can slide backward in all subject areas. This means the summer months and other breaks from school offer great opportunities for families and caregivers to help improve reading and writing.
Summer Learning Programs: Many elementary schools will offer a school-based academic intervention program. These programs provide continuity between summer and the regular school year’s learning goals and activities. Each school will determine its instructional priorities.
Fairfax County Parent Resource Center: The Center encourages parent participation in the educational decision-making process and provides seminars, training programs, and information to foster the parent/professional partnership.
